Paris attackers left no digital footprint says police

It’s been four months since a group of young men stormed venues across Paris and killed 130 people in what is thought to be an ISIS-related terror attack.

Investigators have now pulled together a 55-page document, obtained by the New York Times, detailing evidence gathered since then – including the group’s use of the Web, or lack of, to coordinate their movements.
In what is believed to be a change of tactic to previous terror attacks, the attackers are said to have used the phones of hostages to make calls and use the Web, although apparently thwarted by poor reception.

One anonymous woman who is quoted in the evidence said the attackers even had to struggle with an automated messaging menu while trying to get through to police using her smartphone.

The attackers also had a stash of burner mobiles, many of which had only been activated hours or days before the attack, the report said.

A Samsung phone containing a Belgian SIM had only been live since the day before the attack and is chillingly reported to have images of the Bataclan concert hall’s layout, along with Web searches for gig tickets and the phrase ‘Eagles of Death at the Bataclan.’

The GPS data of this phone led investigators to places the attackers had been, as well as a phone number called that helped the police link the attacks with people living in Belgium.

Phone calls also ultimately led investigators back to the Paris apartment that had just been rented by one of the attacker’s cousins – which went up in an explosion on November 17. The New York Times says:

Inside the ruins, the police found several dozen boxes of unused cellphones still in their wrappers. The phones were found throughout the rubble, including in the rooms and stairwell. Others had been ejected during the blast and fell onto the street below.

Police say they have not been able to find email or any other communications linked to the killers, “prompting the authorities to conclude that the group used encryption,” the NYT said, without any clear evidence to support this claim.

Another odd detail, also from the woman who says her smartphone was used by the group, said:

One of the terrorists pulled out a laptop, propping it open against the wall, said the 40-year-old woman. When the laptop powered on, she saw a line of gibberish across the screen: “It was bizarre — he was looking at a bunch of lines, like lines of code. There was no image, no Internet,” she said. Her description matches the look of certain encryption software, which ISIS claims to have used during the Paris attacks.

A tech activist and former VP of data at Kickstarter, has already called these assumptions into question.

NYTimes also lets slide a observation that leads to a pretty iffy assumption about attackers using encryption: pic.twitter.com/tBMeqOC5Ft

The attackers are believed to have used Western Union, as well as the Middle Eastern ‘hawala informal money exchanged network, to help finance their plans.

Actress Taiwo Aromokun's marriage crashes

The beautiful mother of twin boys who got married to Abimbola on December 26, 2012 at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry, Lagos, has returned from the UK to face her career squarely. In a recent interview, the Lagos State University graduate said: “I am no longer in marriage. I made a big mistake going into that marriage and I have realized my mistakes. I am not ready for any relationship for now. You know what, I still believe in love and I am advising ladies who have found true love to hold on to it because it exists but for me. I need to concentrate on my work and my talk show which will be coming up possibly in May, 2016.” Amebos said that the marriage crashed after the actress got to know that her husband is allegedly married to a white woman in Holland and they have two kids together. He reportedly tricked her into the marriage. In order to avoid immigration trouble, Olayemi allegedly returned to his wife in Holland. The actress was said to have been eventually thrown out of her London flat last month with her twin boys, hence, the need to come back to Nigeria.

obasanjo blasts france britain makes shocking accusation

Former president Olusegun Obasanjo, has taken a swipe at the government of France and Britain over the current happening in Africa.

The former president, who spoke at a press conference on the upcoming Tana High-Level forum on Security in Africa in Ethiopia, accused France and Britain of fueling conflicts in the African region. He said both countries outside interference in the African region has been responsible for conflicts, and cited the NATO air strikes in Libya in 2011 that led to the removal and eventual death Muammar Gaddafi. “The repercussions are now being felt in Mali, Nigeria and the Sahel,” he said. When the elder statesman was asked if African leaders were to blame for the conflicts on the continent, he said: “Yes and no.” Obasanjo, who is the chairman of the Tana forum, blamed some African leaders for the conflicts in the continent, saying they failed to manage diversity in their societies. He explained that leaders were failing their people because they could not stop marginalisation in their societies, prevent injustice, reduce unemployment, reduce poverty as well as embrace democracy and good governance. Speaking on this year’s topic: “Africa in the Global Security Agenda,” the ex-president said the theme is very appropriate because of the continued fallout from the NATO intervention in Libya. He recalled that President Barack Obama of the United States recently criticised the French and British governments for getting rid of Gaddafi without putting in place measures to effective “follow-up.” Obasanjo, who also spoke on African peacekeeping operations, agreed that inadequate funding from African Union member states was an impediment to the peace and security on the continent. According to him, during his tenure as the head of state, he was in charge of a high-level panel to explore alternative sources of funding for the AU, but nothing could be raised. The former president stated that even when AU was looking for money to fight the Ebola virus in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, member states failed to provide funds. “The AU eventually had to turn to the private sector and it was able to raise $40 million,” he said. The forum’s chairman asserted that he was critical of AU member states for not contributing to the AU’s general budget, saying: “I think this is down to the lack of political will.” He pointed out that Ebola and migration from Africa had security implications not only on African continent, “because we now live in a global community whereby if something happens in Africa, it affects the rest of the world. This was why Africa had to take a serious look at its security infrastructure, what Africans could do themselves to deal with these issues, and what should be the continent’s role in formulating security policies globally.” Professor Andreas Eshete of Ethiopia, who is the deputy chairman of the forum reiterated the need for the continent to have not only a stronger voice in the global security design but also for its viewpoints to be taken into account and integrated into the global security agenda.

The 5th Tana High-Level forum will take place on April 16 and 17 in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia. Over 150 participants that are expected to attend include current and former heads of state and government, high-ranking government officials, academics, civil society representatives, experts and policymakers from the AU, UN and other international organisations. Vanguard reports that Obasanjo in a recent interview at the weekend, said the Biafra agitation was a platform for the voice of the people in the South-East to be heard, insisting that Biafra has ceased to exist. He expressed optimism that the people will change their direction when the fortune of the region gets better.

Buhari says Power situation in Nigeria no longer a laughing matter

President Buhari says that the poor power situation in Nigeria is no longer a laughing matter. Buhari said this while declaring open the National Economic Council retreat in Abuja yesterday March 21st.
“Nigerians’ favourite talking point and butt of jokes is the power situation in our country. But, ladies and gentlemen, it is no longer a laughing matter. We must and by the grace of God we will put things right. In the three years left for this administration we have given ourselves the target of ten thousand megawatts distributable power.
In 2016 alone, we intend to add two thousand megawatts to the national grid. This sector has been privatized but has yet to show any improvement in the quality of service. Common public complaints are: Constant power cuts destroying economic activity and affecting quality of life, High electricity bills despite power cuts, Low supply of gas to power plants due to vandalization by terrorists, Obsolete power distribution equipment such as transformers, Power fluctuations, which damage manufacturing equipment and household appliances, Low voltage which cannot run industrial machinery. These are some of the problems, which defied successive governments. In our determination to change we must and will, insha Allah, put a stop to power shortages. Key points to look at here are: Privatization. We are facing the classic dilemma of privatization: Public interest Vs Profit Motive. Having started, we must complete the process. But National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), the regulatory authority, has a vital job to ensure consumers get value for money and over-all public interest is safe-guarded" - Buhari

At least 62 killed in Russia plane crash

A passenger jet has crashed in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, killing all 55 passengers and seven crew on board, officials have said.
The FlyDubai Boeing 737-800, coming from Dubai, missed the runway as it attempted to land at 03:50 local time (00:50 GMT) on Saturday.
It is not clear what caused the crash, but poor visibility and high winds are being considered as a factor, the BBC reports.
Most of the victims were Russian. Four children were among the dead.
FlyDubai said 44 Russians, eight Ukrainians, two Indians and an Uzbek were killed. All were passengers.
All but one of the crew were Russians, a Russian emergency ministry statement said, without giving further details.
CCTV footage showed an explosion and a huge flash after the plane crashed.
“The aircraft hit the ground and broke into pieces,” the BBC quoted Investigative Committee of Russia s saying on its website.

Apple Pay has a Siri problem

"Apple pie?" The woman at the McDonald's drive-through window was confused when I asked if I could use Apple Pay. "No, Apple Pay," I said. "How many?" she asked, still thinking I was asking for an apple pie.
To clear things up, I showed her my iPhone with the image of a credit card on its screen, and she nodded. But then she asked me to hand her my phone to use on the payment terminal inside — a big no-no in Apple pay rules. As I explained that I'd need to use my fingerprint to pay and therefore couldn't hand her my phone, a manager appeared at the window. She told her employee to hold a clunky payment machine out the window for me. Yet, even then, it took two attempts to actually work.
This happened on March 18, 2016, nearly a year and a half after Apple Pay's debut, when I first tested it and ran into a similar issue. Back then, another McDonald's employee flat-out refused to let me use Apple Pay, though it was technically working.
It's not just McDonald's. I also have trouble at Pret A Manger, the trendy fast-food spots that are popular in cities. The Pret below my office in Washington, D.C., has at least eight cash registers, but from what I've experienced, most of them aren't set up for Apple Pay. If I buy something at one of the wrong registers, the cashier must log out of it and log on at the right register before re-entering my purchase so I can use Apple Pay. This has happened at least a dozen times.
A colleague of mine finds that he can't consistently use Apple Pay in New York City cabs, which are supposed to accept Apple Pay.
When a tool like Apple Pay works, it's like magic. You lift your phone, use fingerprint recognition to confirm the purchase, and walk away. The Wallet app in iOS shows you a list of your recent transactions, and adding credit cards is a simple process. But if Apple Pay fails enough times or isn't accepted at enough places, people forget it exists or think it's not worth trying to use. It's a lot like Siri in that way: too many failed attempts and you'll never open it again — at least not on purpose.
Issues at stores like Pret A Manger don't have to do with Apple Pay directly, and could be caused by any number of merchant issues, from broken terminals to software updates. For example, if a store was updating its payment terminals and getting new software, new EMV (the Europay, Mastercard and Visa chip-based debit and credit transactions) capabilities and contactless (Apple Pay, Android Pay) capabilities, one of these three could be delayed waiting for the other two updates.
Some people might also be frustrated by inconsistent experiences with chip card readers. October marked the deadline after which EMV chip readers were supposed to replace magnetic strip swiping, but that hasn't happened. The EMV Migration Forum estimatessome 5 million EMV-ready terminals are in U.S. stores right now, but only 1 million are accepting chips. In my limited experience with EMV chip card readers (mostly at CVS stores), these are slower than swiping a credit card and much slower than using Apple Pay. And if you wondered, Apple Pay does not need EMV to work; it works even when merchants are waiting for their EMV certification.
Several of my friends and family members have set up Apple Pay on their phones, but never use it. They say that they don't know when or where it will work. They're right.
Last month, Apple announced that Apple Pay is available in over 2 million U.S. locations. But, as I've experienced, that doesn't mean that Apple Pay is being used in all of the payment terminals at those locations — or that employees know how to use it.
As for now, the McDonald's employee who asked if I wanted apple pie wasn't too far off base from the confusion that a lot of other people are feeling when it comes to using Apple Pay.

BAD: Violence Erupts At Trump Rally After Supporters Clash With Protesting GOP Leaders

Describing a chaotic scene that resulted in dozens of injuries, sources confirmed Tuesday that violence erupted at a rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump after his supporters clashed with protesting GOP leaders. “Five minutes into Trump’s speech, these really upset older guys in suits suddenly stood up and started shouting a bunch of anti-Trump stuff, and the crowd immediately started pounding on them,” said rally attendee Jared Boyton, noting that former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, who hoisted a handmade sign depicting Trump in a KKK robe beneath the words “Fascism Is Not Conservatism,” was quickly knocked out by a punch to the back of the head, and that Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham were shoved to the floor and repeatedly kicked by the angry mob. “Then [RNC chairman] Reince Priebus and [House Speaker] Paul Ryan rushed the stage and tried to grab Trump’s microphone, but the Secret Service tackled them both to the ground. They kept yelling something about how Trump must be stopped as the agents dragged them out of the building, but you couldn’t really hear what they were saying over the crowd’s boos.” Sources confirmed that the bloodied and battered Republican leaders were held overnight in the Hillsborough County Jail before being bailed out by former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg.

How To Talk To Your Child About Racism

Here are The Onion’s tips for discussing the difficult topic of racism with your child.

  • If you’re having trouble finding the right entry point to the topic, wait a couple hours for some new national tragedy to spur the discussion.
  • Be sure to provide your child with the full historical context surrounding racism, beginning with American slavery and ending with the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
  • They’ll value your honesty. Both “I don’t know” and “Christ, I said I don’t know, Taylor!” are perfectly valid answers to their questions.
  • Invite a Chinese stranger to your home and have your children sit next to them on the couch until they feel at ease. Repeat for all other races.
  • Remind kids it’s okay to notice ethnicity as long as you avoid talking about it until you get in the car.
  • Don’t forget to unconsciously impart all of your racial biases during the discussion.
  • Go ahead and slip in some admonitions in favor of safe sex and responsible driving if the opportunity arises.
  • If your child is upset or uncomfortable, rest assured that you’ve conveyed the situation to them fully and accurately.

NEWS:INEC holds back announcement of results in Rivers rerun elections

INEC has suspended the announcement of results from last Saturday's National and State Assembly election in Rivers state. The election was marred by high incidents of violence. The suspension is contained in a statement released by Oluwole Osaze- Uzzi, INEC's Director of Voter Education and Publicity. This is the statement

"The elections witnessed the disruption of the process, including the barricading of some of the INEC Local Government offices and Registration Area Centres(RACs) used for the distribution of Electoral materials which led to the late commencement of the exercise in some places and consequently, its smooth take off. Of more serious concern was the level of threats, violence and intimidation of election officials and voters by well armed thugs and miscreants allegedly acting on behalf of some politicians, which marred the elections in some areas. There were reports of numerous attacks resulting in fatalities, kidnappings, ballot snatching, diversion of officials and materials, amongst others, which necessitated its suspension in 8 Local Government Areas. Regrettably, such deviant behaviour has continued today. Several permanent and ad hoc staff engaged have been attacked, again resulting in fatalities, while some have been forcibly abducted and taken to presently unknown destinations. Under such difficult circumstance, the Returning Officers were only able to collate and declare results in 1 Federal and 9 State constituencies where the disruption and malpractices were not so widespread. Having reviewed the situation, the Commission is compelled to suspend all further action concerning the exercise in all the other constituencies in the State pending the receipt of a comprehensive report from its Field Officials and Monitors. For the avoidance of doubt, it should be noted that the suspension does not affect the constituencies where the exercise has been completed and the results declared by the Returning Officers”.

Onu reiterated the pivotal role the informal sector offers in creating employments and job opportunities for teeming youths in Nigeria.
In his remarks, Oseni called on the government to help develop ancillary industries for the production of car components and accessories to engage mechanics in Nigeria.

Hillary Clinton Appears Before Rally Completely Nude In Bid For Authenticity

‘Here I Am, A Mere Human Being,’ Says Naked Candidate

Flatly declaring to audience members that she stood on stage as no more than a human being with nothing to hide, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton reportedly appeared Friday before a campaign rally completely nude in a bid to once and for all prove her authenticity.
Moments after being introduced to an enthusiastic crowd by North Carolina congressman G. K. Butterfield, Clinton is said to have taken the stage at PNC Arena, whereupon the 20,000 cheering spectators became abruptly silent at the sight of the fully naked former secretary of state walking slowly across the dais to the tune of John Mellencamp’s “Pink Houses.”
“I am here today not as a politician, nor as a presidential candidate, but simply as a vulnerable, flawed human—just like any one of you,” said Clinton, before pivoting in a slow circle at center stage with her arms outstretched at her sides and her palms held open, presenting to the crowd the entirety of her nude body. “Look upon me, friends. Go ahead and truly look. What you see before you is a living, breathing woman standing here exactly as she was created. I am unadorned. I am without artifice. I am real.”
“This, North Carolina, is Hillary Rodham Clinton,” she continued.
The former first lady, who throughout the rally spoke while clutching a handheld microphone inches from her exposed breasts, was then said to have elaborated for nearly 60 minutes on her essential nature and the shared human experience of being composed of humble organic matter, her pale, naked flesh standing in stark relief against the backdrop of her campaign logo. In addition to foregoing clothing, sources said Clinton appeared without makeup and allowed her hair to fall naturally to her bare shoulders, her unvarnished nude image projected on the arena’s 30-foot Jumbotron screen as she described herself as a “fragile, impermanent vessel.”
Those in attendance reported that Clinton’s speech—which often returned to the theme that, underneath the walls we put up to protect ourselves, we’re all merely people striving, surviving, and trying to do our best—was met largely by uninterrupted silence from the stunned and increasingly uncomfortable audience. Sources added that during pauses in her address, Clinton’s bare feet could be heard sticking against the floor as she walked across the raised platform.
Witnesses also noted that the bright stage lights left Clinton’s entire nude body covered in a visible sheen of slick sweat.
“I ask that you trust me, just as I have placed my trust in you by standing here today utterly defenseless and unconcealed,” said Clinton before taking a sip of water, as a supporter’s cough echoed throughout the arena and the last of the crowd’s “Fighting For Us” posters slowly sank into the sea of spectators. “You can believe in me because I am a person. I have fears, wants, and desires, as all of you do.”
“I have known love and loss, joy and anguish; in the lines and creases of my body, you can read a simple, straightforward story of hard-earned experience,” she added.
During several attempts to lock eyes with uneasy supporters in the front row, sources said Clinton strongly implored those in attendance not to divert their gaze from her naked form, stressing that her exposed body stood as a symbol of who, in essence, we all truly are.
“Yes, this same body has survived childbirth, illness, and nearly seven decades of winters; and yes, it may now lack the suppleness and blush of youth,” said Clinton, who, according to witnesses, then began gently running her hand along her sagging underarm skin and the varicose veins crisscrossing her thighs. “But all of these imperfections simultaneously make me a person like any other and a unique individual, and for that I am grateful. And so, when I say that I will fight to expand the middle class and ensure economic opportunity for all Americans, I can say it with the conviction of someone who has—as we all must one day—confronted and accepted the humbling limitations of the human body.”
“Let there be no doubt that I am who you perceive me to be—nothing more, nothing less,” Clinton continued.
Following the conclusion of her speech, sources confirmed that Clinton exited the stage to a smattering of applause and attempted to embrace resistant supporters along the ropeline before being whisked away to a fundraiser where she posed for photos with unsettled donors.
