Niger fights terrorism dangers on all fronts

Crucial role of drone

A buzzing sound is heard in the sky above Niamey, the capital of Niger.
A few troopers get into position. It's a drill they've been through incalculable times.
As the motor clamor develops louder, what at initially had all the earmarks of being a little plane uncovers itself as something else through and through.
It is an automaton.
This is Base 101, an insight gathering focus set up by the French military as a feature of Operation Barkhane.
Propelled in February 2014, its point is to bolster nations in the area in their battle against Islamist radicals.
Furthermore, rambles assume a vital part, gathering data from the skies over the immense extends of the Sahel and utilizing their complex cameras and radars to look down on a range generally the extent of western Europe.

The knowledge authorities in Base 101 are watchful for contenders having a place with gatherings like purported Islamic State (IS) and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM).

The officer accountable for Operation Barkhane's five automatons is Lt Col Ben; for security reasons, the French military are currently just alluded to by their first names.

He opens the entryway of what resembles a metal compartment. Inside, there are two seats, a few screens indicating sees from the air, a large number of catches and switches, gleaming red lights and two or three joysticks.

"This is the place we pilot the automatons," he says. "We call this the cockpit."

Human mass migration
There are by and large around 40 ramble forays each month; more than one a day. In this confined and restricted space, Lt Col Ben's collaboration six-hour shifts, eyes stuck to their screens.

Niger has now turned into a key counter-terrorism accomplice for the West. A gander at a guide clarifies why.
The nation is landlocked and encompassed by neighbors in a position to send out the exact opposite thing Niger needs: insecurity.

Toward the north is Libya which, as of late, has turned into an axiom for turmoil.

Toward the west lies Mali and its radical uprisings.

Travel east, and you achieve Chad, attempting to contain its own particular inner pressures,.

The other real wellspring of concern is on Niger's southern flank, the Boko Haram rebellion in Nigeria.

Conflicts there have started a human departure. What's more, more than 200,000 individuals have fled to Diffa in south-eastern Niger.

Merchants hit hard

It's a dusty summary place only a couple of kilometers far from the Nigerian outskirt.
Officially living under the shadow of destitution and nourishment unreliability, Diffa's small assets are being extended as far as possible.

In the town's principle market, I meet Ousmane Oumara, a nearby English instructor.

"Merchants here have been hard hit by advancements over the outskirt," he lets me know.

"Things aren't care for they used to be."

Adjacent, a grain trader clarifies that the cost of maize and millet keeps going up on the grounds that supplies from Nigeria have been cut off.

"Now and again I hear the sound of gunfire simply outside the town and I'm anxious," says Ousmane.

With such a variety of individuals touching base from Nigeria, there is insufficient sanctuary for them in Diffa itself.

So a huge number of outcasts have needed to manage as well as can be expected, living in makeshift settlements which line the Route Nationale 1 - Highway Number One - which runs parallel to the Nigerian fringe.

The informal boondocks

At one of these provisional outcast towns, Assaga, individuals have isolated along national lines. Along one side of the street are straw shacks lodging the uprooted from Nigeria; on the other, comparable delicate asylums are currently home to the individuals who have fled their homes in the fringe settlements of Niger.

As I arrive, indicating the left, my driver lets me know: "Here is Assaga-Nigeria."

He then gestures his head towards the other side, including: "And there is Assaga-Niger."

The street has turned into a kind of informal boondocks.

I ask one young lady on the Niger side in the event that she feels safe here.

"It's more secure along the street than back in my town," she replies. "I can't do a reversal home since I'm frightened of Boko Haram."

Her story is reverberated up and down a 200km (120 miles) stretch of street.

'I have the answer!'

As he sits leg over leg inside a temporary tent, to get away from the sweltering warmth of the late morning sun, a 16-year-old kid clarifies his very own catastrophe.

For his own wellbeing, he inclines toward we don't utilize his genuine name. That is on account of, while he and his family figured out how to get away from the savagery, his 14-year-old sibling has been deserted.

"He was concentrating on in Diffa and Boko Haram took him away. They constrained him to go along with them."

You recognize clearly that he profoundly misses his sibling, but on the other hand he's agonized over what will happen to him.

"They're going to fill his head with a wide range of thoughts I don't care for - and I need nothing to do with that."

In another camp somewhat assist along the street, some enormous white canvas tents emerge.

From inside comes the sound of chuckling and the anxious yells of kids.

With their hands up, they're all getting out: "Educator! Educator! I have the answer!"

The educator is Mustafa Diri. When he was compelled to escape his town, only 8km from the Nigerian fringe, he would not like to desert his school.

So he brought it with him.

"I underrated the impact of the PDP for a long time viewing from outside.

The experience of the staff, their dedication and enthusiasm is not the same as what it is presently contrasted with when I was in government. Sixteen years of improvement in the life of a creating country is quite a while.

"The vast majority of the lasting secretaries were conveyed on the grounds that it was the ideal opportunity for some of them to go and for others for one thing or the other. Since were not part of those 16 years this is the place we got ourselves and this is no joke.

"We needed to chop down a large portion of the quantity of lasting secretaries and afterward do some cross postings.

The perpetual secretaries that were there for as far back as five, seven, 15 years the main thing that they know is the means by which things were done in the earlier years.

Whatever we did in the battle, truth be told we were stating trash and that made it extremely troublesome for us.

"Things were significantly more troublesome amid the monetary allowance which all of you think about. For some person like me, surprisingly I heard what is called cushioning.

"I think we will recuperate by the final quarter of the year, what cushioning implies particularly for clergymen who had execute what cushioning contains.

There were intense advancements which I never thought about."

Leaked Documents Reveal Studio Executives Knew About ‘Gods Of Egypt’ Before It Was Released

Suggesting that the disastrous events of three months ago could have been averted, federal investigators stated Wednesday that a trove of leaked documents confirmed high-ranking studio executives had full knowledge of Gods Of Egypt long before the film was released onto unsuspecting Americans.
Sources said the documents—reportedly turned over to the FBI by an anonymous informant at Lionsgate Films—include email correspondence, memos, and financial records indicating the vast extent of negligence on the part of top-level management, who, despite knowing of plans to unleash the fantasy-action epic on the public more than three years in advance, chose to do nothing.
“As early as March 2013, people in key positions at the studio were clearly aware of coordinated efforts to screen Gods Of Egypt in major metropolitan areas across the country,” said lead investigator Timothy Benfield, pointing out dozens of damning emails to Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer that laid out the film’s disturbing storyline step by step and confirmed its imminent distribution. “Not only did these executives repeatedly fail to act after learning details about the movie’s narrative arc and cast, they also neglected to intervene upon discovering the film would be rated PG-13, which ensured that untold numbers of children were directly targeted.”
“They had every opportunity to prevent the events of February 26, 2016,” continued Benfield, referring to the now-infamous date of the film’s release. “Yet they simply stood by and watched this senseless tragedy unfold.”

According to the FBI’s report, the activities and whereabouts of key players in Gods Of Egypt’s production were known to executives for over a decade, including those of director Alex Proyas, who masterminded similar calamities such as I, Robot in 2004 and Knowing in 2009. Studio officials, however, were said to have stayed silent, allowing Gods Of Egypt to continue even after receiving word that Proyas had recruited a team of actors to carry out elaborate fight sequences dressed as 10-foot-tall animal-headed deities.
Additionally, top brass at Lionsgate reportedly neglected to warn their counterparts overseas, setting off a chain of events that ultimately allowed the high-budget adventure film to show on more than 3,000 screens around the world, resulting in a catastrophe of global scope.
“Complete scripts, full storyboards, and a production timeline crossed the desks of at least a dozen executives, and yet they didn’t take the simple step of freezing assets or otherwise preventing the flow of crucial resources from falling into the hands of those responsible for the film,” Benfield said. “They were even aware that the crew who pulled off Gods Of Egypt had gotten ahold of IMAX technology, potentially putting millions more in the path of the movie.”
“And after studio chiefs learned the film would feature two actors riding immense, fire-breathing CGI cobras across the desert, still no action was taken,” added Benfield. “They just watched as all those innocent people bought their tickets and filed into theaters like lambs to the slaughter.”
Upon hearing of the leaked documents, many of those still traumatized from having witnessed Gods Of Egypt expressed their revulsion at Lionsgate executives for failing to step in and prevent hundreds of thousands of Americans from experiencing 127 unfathomably hellish minutes of horrendous special effects and painful dialogue.
“How could any decent person know about this and just let it happen?” said 41-year-old Flagstaff, AZ resident Katherine Plante, who, like thousands of others, looked on in abject horror on opening night, powerless to do anything as Gerard Butler transformed into a giant gold bird. “Think of all the families who only wanted to have a nice night out together but found themselves in this...this nightmare. It’s devastating to realize it could have been stopped.”
Added Plante, wiping away a tear, “I just hope they never let anything like this happen again.”

IS THE EXISTENCE OF PASSWORD COMING TO AN END ?

In news that really isn’t news, we’re really bad at passwords, and we hate them. Sorry, but it’s nothing personal … it’s just what the research shows. In a new survey entitled “Businesses Should Begin Preparing for the Death of the Password,” 2,000 U.S. and 2,000 U.K. adults were asked questions about their online security practices.

According to the survey, conducted by OnePoll and sponsored by customer identity management provider Gigya, only 16 percent of consumers maintain a unique password for each online account. That means that the vast majority of us are reusing the same string over and over again, so if one account is compromised, we’re in some serious hot water.
And compromised they are — over 25 percent of respondents said they’d experienced a digital breach in the last 12 months, which is likely due to our penchant for creating passwords like “password,” “1234,” or using names or birthdays to secure vital information.

New study revives issue of whether cell phone radiation can cause cancer

It’s back. The dreaded debate over the effects of cell phone radiation and cancer has returned, and if you number among the 92 percent of Americans who own a mobile device, you may want to sit down. Initial findings from a $25 million, two-and-a-half-year study by the National Toxicology Program suggest that radio-frequency (RF) radiation emitted by our cellphones can indeed cause cancer.
In conducting their research, scientists exposed male rats to two kinds of RF radiation, and found that they were “significantly more likely” to develop brain cancer than were rats that were not exposed to the radiation. In particular, exposed rats tended towards a type of brain cancer known as a glioma, as well as a higher likelihood for a rare tumor called a schwannoma of the heart. This same effect, however, was not observed in female rats.
“This is by far—far and away—the most carefully done cell phone bioassay, a biological assessment. This is a classic study that is done for trying to understand cancers in humans,” said Christopher Portier, who once served as the head of the NTP before his retirement. “There will have to be a lot of work after this to assess if it causes problems in humans, but the fact that you can do it in rats will be a big issue. It actually has me concerned, and I’m an expert.”

Asus might get back in tablet game with the Zenpad Z8 for Verizon

Verizon’s lineup of tablets includes everything from iPads to Samsung Galaxy tablets, but it might soon include Asus’ unannounced Zenpad Z8, according to known leaker Evan Blass.
Possibly standing in as the Zenpad S 8.0‘s successor, the Zenpad Z8 will reportedly sport an 8-inch, 2,048 x 1,536 resolution display, making the panel as sharp as the iPad Mini’s. Under the hood, the Zenpad Z8 swaps out the quad-core Intel Atom processor found in the original for a hexa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 processor. In other words, while you should not expect to do some heavy gaming, the processor should be more than good enough for less specific, everyday tasks.

Elsewhere, the Zenpad Z8 is rumored to sport 2GB RAM, as well as 16GB of expandable native storage. Seeing how Big Red looks to be the carrier that will sell the tablet, you should also expect to find LTE radios. Around front, the Zenpad Z8 looks to pack a 1.8-megapixel camera, with an 8MP sensor. We expect the tablet to include a USB Type-C port, seeing how the Zenpad S 8.0 included one. Finally, as for the operating system, Blass did not say, though we hope the Zenpad Z8 runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

Blass also did not mention how much Verizon will sell the tablet for, but given Asus’ previous tablet offerings, we should not expect the price to be anything outlandish. Furthering the point, since the Zenpad Z8 looks to be sold through Verizon, expect it to be sold in monthly installments as an alternative to the total upfront cost.
Even though Blass did not say when the Zenpad Z8 might be released, we consider it quite possible that Asus would officially announce the tablet on May 30, when the company is slated to unveil its latest ZenFone 3 family of smartphones.
