Istanbul Airport suspected ISIS bombers were Uzbek, Russian, Kyrgyz

Three suspected Islamic State (ISIS) suicide bombers who killed 43 people in a gun and bomb attack at Istanbul's main airport this week were Russian, Uzbek and Kyrgyz nationals, a Turkish government official said on Thursday June 30.

The suicide bombers opened fire to create panic outside, before two of them got inside the terminal building and blew themselves up. The third detonated his explosives at the entrance. At least 239 people were wounded in the attack.

According to Reuters, the Turkey official who confirmed the terrorists' nationalities, declined to be named because details of the investigation have not yet been released. Forensics teams had been struggling to identify the bombers from their limited remains, officials said earlier.

"A medical team is working around the clock to conclude the identification process," one of the officials said.
Interior Minister Efkan Ala told parliament that evidence continued to point to ISIS responsibility and that the death toll had risen to 43, of whom 19 were foreigners. Ala said the identity and nationality of one of the bombers had been determined but did not comment further.

The pro-government Yeni Safak newspaper said the Russian bomber was from Dagestan, which borders Chechnya. Turkey's Hurriyet newspaper named him as Osman Vadinov and said he had come from Raqqa, the heart of Islamic State-controlled territory in Syria.

The Russian interior ministry said it was checking information about Vadinov. A spokesman for Kyrgyzstan's state security service said it was investigating, while the Uzbek security service had no immediate comment.

Why have so many huge diamonds been found recently?

The huge rough diamond that went on sale at auction on Wednesday was one of three big diamonds found recently after a break of more than a century. The BBC's Clare Spencer asks why.
On 16 November 2015 Tiroyaone Mathaba was sorting through rocks at the Karowe mine in Botswana when he spotted what turned out to be the 1,109 carat diamond.
It was the size of a tennis ball.
His boss William Lamb told True Africa that all of the mine's 804 employees and contractors received a bonus, but he didn't reveal how much.
Mr Mathaba's discovery, The Lesedi la Rona which means "our light" in the Tswana language, wasn't the only big gem discovered that week - two other huge diamonds were found from the same mine within 72 hours.
A 374 carat diamond which hasn't been named and an 812.77 carat diamond called The Constellation were also discovered.
Mr Mathaba works for Canadian company Lucara which suspected that there might be big diamonds in the area after recovering a 239 carat diamond two years earlier.
At that time it was standard practice to break down any kimberlite ore to 30mm before putting it through the sorting machine to test its density and see if it contained any diamonds.

The machine couldn't cope with anything bigger.
But this raises the possibility that large diamonds were being crushed in the very process of trying to discover them.
So Lucara bought an X-ray machine to detect the carbon in the ore.
The investment paid off.
The Constellation was sold for $63.1m (£46m) in May.
The Lesedi la Rona had been expected to sell for even more on Wednesday but did not meet the minimum reserve price.
The two are the biggest diamonds ever recovered through an industrial process, says Paul Day, Lucara's chief operating officer.
The biggest diamond, the Cullinan, was found more than 100 years ago only nine metres from the surface and was extracted using a pocket knife, Mr Day says the story goes.
That's a far cry from the modern industrial mining techniques which use explosions to extract the ore and then crushing machines to break it down further.

Mr Day finds the gap of more than a century between finding the largest and second largest diamond surprising.
He points out that several large diamonds were also found before industrial mining began.
He says that it is not out-of-the question that bigger diamonds have previously been crushed down to smaller pieces.
"Diamonds are incredibly hard and also very strong but they do break."
"If you take a 100 carat diamond and you hit it with a hammer against steel there is a chance you will break it into pieces."
This kind of force is what the rocks undergo in the mining process.
It is what Mr Day calls the diamond miner's dilemma.
There's not much that can be done to reduce the damage done to the diamonds while extracting them from the ground, he says.
But changing the sorting process leaves diamond miners one step closer to having just one dilemma: How to spend the money.

No trade talks until full Brexit -Cecilia Malmstrom

"First you exit then you negotiate," Cecilia Malmstrom told BBC Newsnight.
After Brexit, the UK would become a "third country" in EU terms, she said - meaning trade would be carried out based on World Trade Organisation rules until a new deal was complete.
A recent trade deal with Canada took seven years to negotiate.
The Canadian agreement will also require ratification by all EU countries, adding another one to two years before it takes effect.
Ms Malmstrom, the EU Trade Commissioner, underlined that detailed talks to shape the UK's new trading relationship with the EU should not start until after the process of leaving politically, under an Article 50 process lasting up to two years.
"There are actually two negotiations. First you exit, and then you negotiate the new relationship, whatever that is," she said.

"The referendum - which of course we take note of and respect - has no legal effect. First there has to be notification, which the next prime minister will do, I hope swiftly. And then that process can start."
There is concern in the City that having to do business for years under WTO rules could be disastrous for the UK's service industries.
Asked whether sticking to such a process wouldn't harm the economies of all EU members, Ms Malmstrom replied: "Yes, but the vote was very clear."
She said she was "saddened" that the UK - which has traditionally defended the principle of free trade - is leaving the EU.
Fearsome challenge
Under EU law, the bloc cannot negotiate a separate trade deal with one of its own members, hence the commissioner's insistence that the UK must first leave.
It is also against EU law for a member to negotiate its own trade deals with outsiders, which means the UK cannot start doing this until after it has left the EU.
Taken at face value, these rules mean the UK cannot conduct its own trade talks for up to two years - a fearsome challenge to any prime minister trying to deliver Brexit.
EU officials say the UK's options will soon refine themselves into a Norway-style package that keeps Britain within the single market - subject to EU rules and regulations - or a bespoke "third country" deal on the pattern of Canada's.
They agree that because British businesses are already compliant with EU rules and regulations, choosing to remain within the single market would be "a little quicker", than negotiating a deal like Canada's.
But even a Norway-style single market access deal, they caution, could take years to negotiate, leaving the UK trading on WTO terms in the meantime.

Mississippi Police Search for missing inmate accused of murder

Police in Mississippi have launched a manhunt for an accused murderer believed to have escaped from jail by climbing through a hole in the wall.

Malcolm Jamal Landfair was still on the run as of early Friday morning, after last being accounted for Thursday at 4 a.m., according to Hinds County Sheriff Victor Mason.

The 29-year-old prisoner is thought to have escaped with 19-year-old Gerome Montreal Moore, though was captured around 5 p.m. Thursday, according to the Jackson Clarion-Ledger.

Landfair was set for a trial in early July after being charged with the murder of Christopher Catchings at an apartment complex last year.

Mason believes that he and Moore used metal objects to make a hole in the wall of the jail and escape early Thursday morning.
The sheriff also criticized the jail as “thrown up overnight” and said that it was not fully staffed because five guards were on sick leave.
Landfair and Moore are thought to have had help, and authorities think that someone picked them up in a vehicle outside the jail.
The Hinds County Detention Center was also the site of four escapes last year.

Federal officials had criticized the facility and a jail in Jackson for not protecting inmates from violence and kept them passed their release dates, saying in part that they were understaffed.
As the prisoners were on the run on Thursday, a release from the Justice Department said that the feds had reached a deal with Hinds County for improvements including enhanced security.

SHOCKING!!! David Cameron steps down as UK's Prime Minister

UK Prime Minister David Cameron resigned today after his devastating defeat in the EU referendum. He had fought strongly for Britain to remain in the EU but lost. He said he will stay in post till about October this year when a new Prime Minister is chosen. He said the country requires fresh leadership.

Cameron's voice broke as he spoke outside Downing Street this morning with his wife Samantha in tears next to him. “We should aim to have a new prime minister in place by the start of the Conservative Party conference in October," he told the media after the country voted to leave the European Union.

The Brexit campaign officially passed the winning post in the EU referendum at around 6am today, triggering a political earthquake and panic in the markets. Nigel Farage earlier declared it to be 'independence day' and a 'victory for real people' as the Leave campaign racked up votes across England and Wales - defying the verdict of London, Scotland and most of the big cities.

The Pound - which soared in value earlier after Nigel Farage admitted he thought Brexit had lost - has nose-dived against US dollar to its lowest level for 31 years. And more than £100billion was wiped off the FTSE 100 within minutes as markets opened on Friday as Britain's decision caused turmoil across global exchanges.
