The new season length does not alter plans for creator and executive producer Sam Esmail to direct the entire season; it does, however, add two more episodes to his workload. Esmail is really stepping it up this season after directing five of season 1’s 10 episodes.
“The first season of Mr. Robot was everything we hoped for — and then some,” said Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, in a statement. “So it’s no surprise that Sam and team have raised the bar even more in season two. From the first moments of the new season, it’ll be clear that audiences are in for something incredibly special and wholly unexpected.”
Among the “unexpected” elements that Esmail has planned for season 2 is at least one scene shot in virtual reality. It will be fascinating to see what else he has up his sleeve. Adding to the fun is the fact that fans will now have the chance to learn more during the new live aftershow. Like aftershows on other networks, such as HBO’s After the Thrones and BBC’s After the Black, Hacking Robot will offer behind-the-scenes insight on the show.
In season 2, Mr. Robot will continue following the journey of Elliot Alderson (played by Rami Malek) in the wake of the fsociety 5/9 hack on Evil Corp. The cast also includes Christian Slater, Portia Doubleday, Carly Chaikin, Martin Wallström, Grace Gummer, Michael Cristofer, Stephanie Corneliussen, and more.
